Milwaukee is making waves in the world of architecture with the Ascent MKE apartment complex, which currently holds the title for the tallest timber building globally. And it seems this Wisconsin city might keep that title for a while. A Vancouver-based firm, Michael Green Architects, has unveiled plans for an ambitious multi-tower timber project that’s set to soar around 600 feet with 55 stories—more than twice the height of Ascent.
Rather than traditional wooden beams, the project will utilize mass timber materials, also known as engineered wood. Mass timber is not only strong and aesthetically appealing, but it also offers excellent fire resistance and is a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to concrete.
The new project, named the Marcus Center, will span 1.2 million square feet and include 750 residences, alongside offices, hotel rooms, retail spaces, and public walkways. For those interested in seeing more, you can explore renderings of this upcoming timber skyscraper in Popular Science.
