If you’ve ever caught your pup staring at the TV—or even barking at it—you’re not imagining things. Dogs really do watch TV! But unlike us, they have their own unique taste in content.
Veterinary ophthalmologist Freya Mowat recently conducted a study on canine eyesight and surveyed 1,200 dog owners about their pets’ TV-watching habits. The results? Most dogs prefer watching other dogs over anything else! (Kind of like how we love watching other humans.)
Besides their fellow furry friends, pups also enjoy watching other animals, ranking them higher than humans, who landed ninth out of 17 categories. And just like kids with cartoons, dogs seem to love fast-moving visuals the most.
But while dogs do watch TV, they might not be enjoying it the way we do. “I think dogs watch TV because they’re checking if it is real,” Mowat explained to The Guardian.
So, should you leave the TV on for your pup? Mowat says it depends. Some shows could be overstimulating or stressful for dogs, so pet parents should be mindful of what’s on screen. If you’re curious about your own dog’s preferences, you can even explore DOGTV, a streaming service made just for them!
