In a major move to cut government waste, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—led by Elon Musk—has recovered $1.9 billion in misplaced funds from the Biden administration.
The money, originally allocated to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), was meant for financial services administration but was ultimately never used. Instead of sitting in bureaucratic limbo, these funds have now been recovered and made available for other uses.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), DOGE announced:
“$1.9 billion of HUD money was just recovered after being misplaced during the Biden administration due to a broken process. These funds were earmarked for the administration of financial services, but were no longer needed.”
HUD and DOGE Join Forces to Fix the System
HUD Secretary Scott Turner has been working with DOGE to fix the underlying issues that led to this financial mismanagement. He confirmed that the funds were successfully “de-obligated”—meaning they are now available for use by the Treasury instead of being lost in red tape.
Turner also announced the formation of a DOGE task force within HUD, stating:
“We will be very detailed and deliberate about every dollar spent in serving tribal, rural, and urban communities across America.”
Just two days before this announcement, Turner revealed that his team had already identified $260 million in additional savings, reinforcing DOGE’s mission to track down billions in questionable spending.
DOGE and the EPA Target More Wasteful Spending
The crackdown on financial mismanagement doesn’t stop at HUD. With DOGE’s help, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has been canceling wasteful Biden-era grants.
🚫 $50 million in “climate justice” grants—canceled. These funds were set to go to an organization that claims “climate justice travels through a Free Palestine.”
🚫 $160 million to a Canadian electric bus manufacturer—stopped. The Biden administration paid the entire amount upfront, instead of making payments as school buses were produced. The company has since gone bankrupt.
Zeldin called out the reckless financial decisions, stating that the EPA must operate responsibly rather than handing out blank checks.

Elon Musk’s DOGE team is on a mission to eliminate government waste and hold agencies accountable for financial mismanagement. With billions more in questionable spending already identified, expect to see more action in the coming weeks.
