Imagine a city where cutting-edge technology seamlessly integrates into daily life—a place where futuristic concepts become reality. Welcome to Woven City, Toyota’s ambitious $10 billion project nestled at the base of Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji.
Woven City isn’t your typical urban development. It’s designed as a “living laboratory,” a dynamic environment where residents, affectionately termed “Weavers,” collaborate to test and refine innovative technologies. From interactive pet robots to autonomous, zero-emission vehicles, the city offers a glimpse into the future of urban living.
The city’s layout is meticulously planned to foster seamless mobility and connectivity. Three distinct types of streets cater to various modes of transportation: one for fast vehicles, another for personal mobility devices, and a pedestrian-only pathway. This thoughtful design ensures safety and efficiency for all residents.
Sustainability is at the heart of Woven City. Buildings are equipped with solar panels and utilize hydrogen fuel cells, promoting clean energy use. Underground passageways facilitate discreet and efficient movement of goods, minimizing surface-level disruptions and enhancing the city’s aesthetic appeal.
The first phase of construction, covering approximately 47,000 square meters, was completed in October 2024. The initial group of 100 residents, primarily Toyota employees and their families, is set to move in later this year. As the city expands, it aims to accommodate up to 2,000 inhabitants, including inventors and entrepreneurs eager to contribute to this groundbreaking ecosystem.
Daisuke Toyoda, the project’s leader and great-grandson of Toyota’s founder, envisions Woven City as a hub for innovation. “It’s a living laboratory where the residents are willing participants, giving inventors the opportunity to freely test their ideas in a secure, real-life setting,” he shared.
