Ocasio-Cortez Warns: Trump Admin Will Have a ‘Problem’ if More Democrats Arrested

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) listens during a mark up meeting with the House Committee on Energy and Commerce committee on Capitol Hill on May 13, 2025 in Washington, DC. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has taken her usual firebrand style up a notch—this time with a warning aimed squarely at the Trump administration. In an Instagram video posted on Sunday, the far-left congresswoman warned that arresting more Democrat lawmakers would lead to “a problem.”

The warning comes after three Democrat House members from New Jersey—Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver—were arrested at an ICE detention facility in Newark. The arrest occurred during what they claimed was a peaceful protest, but ICE officials say otherwise.

In the video, Ocasio-Cortez accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of engaging in what she described as “public intimidation.”

“If anyone’s breaking the law in this situation, it’s not members of Congress, it’s the Department of Homeland Security,” she said. “It’s people like Tom Homan and Secretary Kristi Noem.”

While neither Homan nor Noem is currently at the helm of DHS—Homan previously served as acting ICE director and Noem is the Governor of South Dakota—AOC appeared to be drawing attention to prominent Trump-aligned figures connected to immigration enforcement.

Her warning escalated further:

“You lay a finger on someone, on Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman … or any of the representatives that were there, you lay a finger on them, we are going to have a problem,” she declared. “Because the people who are breaking the law are the people not abiding by it.”

AOC has made a habit of using social media to rally her progressive base, but her comments this time echoed broader concerns among Democrats that the Trump administration is using federal law enforcement to target political opponents—a narrative frequently used to paint the former president as authoritarian.

According to ICE officials, the Democrat lawmakers were part of a protest crowd at Delaney Hall, a detention center in Newark, New Jersey. During the protest, officials claim there was shoving and pushing, and that the lawmakers were disrupting the facility’s operations.

The incident occurred as ICE was carrying out what the Trump administration calls critical operations to detain violent illegal immigrants. Delaney Hall has become a hot-button issue in the state. While federal officials defend the facility’s necessity, local Democrat leaders insist it lacks proper permitting and should not be housing migrants.

Among those arrested was Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was handcuffed and removed from the premises. According to reports, both his wife and his elderly mother were also present, sparking emotional reactions from Democrats.

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), one of those arrested, spoke out on MSNBC, accusing the Trump administration of “weaponizing law enforcement.”

“To take the mayor of the largest city in the state of New Jersey and put him in handcuffs and then take him away, and his mother, God bless her soul, in addition to his wife. His mother is here, and she has been here since they brought him here. This is not America,” she said.

“This is the sick man’s idea of what he thinks he can do to any one of us, or all of us that he doesn’t like.”

Her statements reflect the broader Democrat messaging that law enforcement is being used for political retaliation—a talking point often echoed by progressive media and activist circles.

While Democrats are painting the event as a civil rights issue, conservatives see it differently. The arrests occurred at a federally operated ICE facility—a location tasked with holding individuals who are in the country illegally, some with violent criminal backgrounds. Federal agencies argue that security protocol must be followed regardless of who’s protesting outside the gates.

The protest, the arrests, and now AOC’s warning add more fuel to the already boiling political climate as the 2024 election season heats up.

And it raises questions: Are Democrat lawmakers above the law? Is law enforcement being targeted simply for doing their job?

As Trump and his administration continue to crack down on illegal immigration and hold firm on border security, resistance from progressive lawmakers appears to be intensifying. Whether this episode is a one-time stunt or a preview of more confrontations to come remains to be seen.

Ocasio-Cortez’s warning may play well with her activist base, but to many Americans, it underscores a disturbing trend—elected officials treating themselves as untouchable, while law enforcement officers are demonized for enforcing the law.

Trump has made it clear: no one is above the law, not even members of Congress. And despite the noise from the left, most Americans still believe that secure borders and rule of law matter.

As the dust settles from this incident, one thing is clear: the political battles over immigration, law enforcement, and federal authority are far from over.
