A heartbreaking story out of Colorado has conservatives across the country asking: Where’s the justice?
President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently stepped in to do what local officials refused to — hold someone accountable. DHS, through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has arrested an illegal alien who was convicted in the tragic death of 24-year-old Kaitlyn Weaver. The young woman’s life was cut short in 2024 when the 16-year-old illegal immigrant crashed into her car at over 90 miles per hour — in a 45 mph zone.
Kaitlyn, just driving home from work in Arapahoe County, Colorado, never made it. Two days after the crash, her family had to make the gut-wrenching decision to remove her from life support.
The teen driver, a Colombian national in the country illegally, was initially charged with vehicular homicide. That’s a serious charge — one that would typically lead to jail time, especially when it involves reckless behavior and the loss of a young life. But District Attorney Amy Padden, a Democrat, had other ideas.
No Jail — Just Probation
Despite the severity of the crash and Kaitlyn’s death, DA Padden’s office offered the teen a shockingly lenient plea deal. No prison. No juvenile detention. Just two years of probation and 100 hours of community service.
Understandably, Kaitlyn’s father, John Weaver, has been devastated — and furious.
“Immigration and the criminal justice system and all these things landed together one day in Aurora and now I sit here today without a daughter,” Weaver said in an earlier interview.
To make things worse, the family was initially told there would be no plea deal offered. But months later, the deal was suddenly on the table — with little explanation.
“Why the change? If he had taken a firearm and recklessly just shot it and killed someone, this would be a different case. They would be pushing it completely differently,” John Weaver told the press. “There’s no deterrence.”
ICE Steps Up
On Friday, ICE announced they had arrested the teen, along with other members of his family, for immigration violations. The move sends a clear message: while local officials may look the other way, ICE isn’t backing down.
“For the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office, justice is no jail time and probation for this criminal alien who killed a young woman while driving more than 90 mph,” ICE said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
“For ICE, justice is arrest and removal.”
The illegal alien now remains in ICE custody as he awaits an immigration hearing. If all goes as expected, he will be deported — but not before facing the consequences in immigration court.
John Weaver responded to the ICE arrests with gratitude:
“I appreciate ICE taking enforcement action, and I really appreciate the outpouring of support from everyone,” he told Fox News Digital.
A Bigger Issue
This case isn’t just about one tragic loss. It’s about what happens when immigration enforcement breaks down and pro-criminal policies take over. A young woman with her whole life ahead of her was killed — and the person responsible nearly walked away scot-free.
And while President Joe Biden’s administration has faced criticism for rolling back Trump-era immigration policies, this case may highlight why border security and enforcement matter — not just at the border, but in local communities across America.
This isn’t an isolated story either. ICE has been forced to clean up after soft-on-crime prosecutors more than once in recent years.
