In what’s being called one of the largest last-minute spending sprees in U.S. government history, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright is raising the alarm over a $90 billion wave of green energy loans quietly approved by the Biden administration in the final weeks before President Donald Trump was sworn back into office.
“Absolutely infuriating,” Wright told Breitbart News. “This wasn’t just irresponsible — it was political.”
In an exclusive interview with Breitbart Washington Bureau Chief Matt Boyle, Secretary Wright revealed that more than $90 billion in loans were rushed through the Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office (LPO) between Election Day 2024 and Trump’s January 2025 inauguration.
To put it in perspective:
- In 15 years, the LPO had approved $43 billion total.
- In just 76 days after Trump won? They pushed through more than twice that.
- $49 billion — more than half — was approved in just the last two days before Biden left office.
“More than $90 billion in loans were closed or committed in the 76 days between Election Day and Inauguration Day,” Wright confirmed.
The LPO was originally created to support innovation in energy, but Wright says it’s been corrupted by politics.
“The government in general has not been a great picker of winners and losers because they don’t look at businesses,” Wright said.
“Governments look at politics.”
That sentiment echoes widespread conservative concerns that Biden’s energy agenda was never really about innovation—it was about rewarding Democrat-aligned companies and donors.
Conservative watchdogs like The Federalist and Breitbart News have long pointed out how Democrat climate policy is really about central planning and corporate favoritism, not sustainability or energy independence.
The most alarming part of this scandal isn’t just the amount of money—it’s the timing.
As Breitbart’s Matt Boyle noted, the Biden team made this massive financial commitment after knowing they lost the election, effectively tying the hands of the incoming Trump administration and ensuring their political allies got one last payday.
“This wasn’t about doing the right thing. It was about locking in deals before Trump could clean house,” Boyle explained during the interview.
Secretary Wright says the Department is still combing through the loans to figure out where the money actually went. But don’t expect to see many red states on the beneficiary list.
“We’re still looking into how these loans were approved and who benefited,” Wright said.
Translation: the American people were left in the dark while the Biden administration threw tens of billions at questionable green projects on its way out the door.
This isn’t the first time the Department of Energy has been caught playing fast and loose with taxpayer dollars. Many conservatives remember the Solyndra scandal under Obama, when the administration dumped $535 million into a solar company that went bankrupt—leaving taxpayers with the bill.
Now, Biden’s team may have taken that playbook and put it on steroids.
“It’s government trying to jam through ideological priorities without accountability,” said one official familiar with the investigation.
The Trump administration and House Republicans are reportedly preparing oversight hearings and possibly even criminal referrals once all the details are revealed.
“This is exactly why we need to root out the deep state and the D.C. swamp,” one GOP lawmaker told Breitbart.
Expect fireworks on Capitol Hill in the coming weeks as Trump’s team works to unwind the deals, investigate who benefited, and hold Biden officials accountable for what looks like a deliberate scheme to dodge the will of voters.
