Report: New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Subpoenaed over Comment Implying He Is Sheltering Illegal Alien

New Jersey’s Democrat Governor Phil Murphy is facing serious legal questions after a February remark suggesting he was personally sheltering an illegal alien in his home — a claim now reportedly under federal investigation.

According to the New York Times, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba has issued a subpoena to Murphy and launched an investigation into whether the governor may have violated immigration laws by allegedly offering sanctuary to a woman with questionable legal status.

Murphy’s eyebrow-raising comments came during a livestreamed meeting with Blue Wave New Jersey, a left-wing advocacy group. Referring to someone in his personal circle with unresolved immigration status, Murphy boasted:

“Tammy and I were talking about … there’s someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to,” he said. “And, we said, ‘You know what? Let’s have her live at our house above our garage,’ and good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.”

That reckless quip — casually challenging federal law enforcement while potentially admitting to harboring an illegal alien — triggered immediate concern among immigration officials and conservative watchdogs alike.

🚨 US Attorney for NJ Alina Habba has SUBPOENAED Democrat NJ Governor Phil Murphy for conspiring to HARBOR ILLEGALS in his home

According to Times sources familiar with the matter, FBI agents have since interviewed at least four witnesses related to Murphy’s comments. One source confirmed that the governor himself has been subpoenaed, although he has not yet been formally questioned.

While Murphy’s team has scrambled to walk back the statement — with a spokesperson later claiming “nobody has ever lived in the home” under such circumstances — the damage appears done. In a post-Biden border crisis era, such offhand remarks carry heavy weight — particularly when coming from a sitting state executive.

Murphy’s remarks weren’t made in a vacuum. New Jersey is among the bluest of blue states that has increasingly positioned itself as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Under Murphy’s leadership, the state has expanded benefits to non-citizens, issued state IDs to illegal immigrants, and resisted cooperation with ICE.

The governor’s attitude during the discussion — flippant and defiant toward federal enforcement — is emblematic of a larger Democrat approach: one that dismisses the rule of law in favor of ideological virtue signaling.

For conservatives, this moment crystallizes a growing concern: when elected officials openly mock immigration law and hint at harboring illegal aliens in their own homes, what does that say about their commitment to national sovereignty, border security, and equal enforcement of the law?

While the investigation is still in early stages, the issuance of a subpoena suggests this is more than a passing curiosity. The Department of Justice — often criticized for its uneven approach to enforcement — now faces pressure to demonstrate that even high-ranking Democrats are not above the law.

If the investigation finds that Murphy knowingly offered housing to someone unlawfully present in the U.S., it could trigger a legal firestorm — and reignite debate about the consequences (or lack thereof) for officials who undermine immigration enforcement.
