President Donald Trump reacted publicly Wednesday following reports that actor George Clooney and his family were granted French citizenship, a development confirmed through a naturalization decree published by the Official Journal of the French Republic on Saturday, December 27. The decree listed Clooney, his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney—a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer—and their twin children, Ella and Alexander, among several dozen individuals approved for French citizenship during the same period.
International media outlets, including Le Monde, reported that the Clooney family has maintained long-standing ties to Europe. In 2021, Clooney purchased a former wine estate in southern France known as the “Domaine du Canadel,” located near the village of Brignoles. Public reporting also indicates the actor owns additional properties in Italy’s Lake Como region, a historic manor in England, an apartment in New York, and a property in Kentucky, where he was born. The French citizenship announcement therefore followed years of personal and financial connections to Europe rather than a sudden relocation.
Trump addressed the development in a post on Truth Social Wednesday evening, responding not only to the citizenship news but also to Clooney’s past political involvement and commentary. In the post, Trump criticized Clooney’s public positions and broader political judgment, writing:
“Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden. Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat. Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Clooney has been an active political donor and public advocate in recent election cycles, frequently participating in fundraisers and public discussions tied to Democratic candidates and causes. His international property holdings and now-confirmed dual-national status highlight how high-profile Americans with global assets can more easily establish residency and citizenship abroad, a reality shaped by wealth, mobility, and international legal frameworks.
The episode underscores how cultural figures remain intertwined with national political debates, particularly when their personal decisions intersect with broader issues such as immigration policy, public safety, and the influence of celebrity voices in electoral politics. While citizenship decisions are ultimately legal and personal matters, public reactions to them often reflect larger disagreements over governance, accountability, and the role of prominent individuals in shaping political discourse.
