Chief Justice John Roberts Warns Politicians on ‘Both Sides’ Against Violent Rhetoric Targeting Judges

In a rare and serious moment of candor, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stark warning this weekend about the growing threat posed by violent political rhetoric—especially when aimed at judges simply doing their jobs.

Speaking at the Judicial Conference of the Fourth Circuit in Charlotte, North Carolina, Roberts addressed a room full of judges and lawyers, and didn’t mince words:

“It becomes wrapped up in the political dispute that a judge who’s doing his or her job is part of the problem,” Roberts said. “And the danger, of course, is somebody might pick up on that. And we have had, of course, serious threats of violence and murder of judges just simply for doing their work.”

He continued with a clear warning to politicians on both sides of the aisle:

“So, I think the political people on both sides of the aisle need to keep that in mind.”

Roberts has generally steered clear of political drama. But this isn’t the first time he’s stepped in when he felt the judicial branch was under attack. Back in 2020, he publicly condemned Democrat Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, who aimed threatening remarks toward Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch during an abortion rally:

“You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you…” Schumer shouted.

Though Schumer later claimed his remarks weren’t threats but political messaging aimed at Senate Republicans, the episode raised serious alarms. Roberts was right to push back—threatening rhetoric has no place in a constitutional republic where judicial independence is a cornerstone.

Roberts’ comments come on the heels of a major Supreme Court victory for President Trump. On Friday, the Court ruled to limit federal judges from issuing nationwide injunctions—a tactic frequently used by activist judges to stall Trump’s policy agenda.

Trump celebrated the move:

“This was a big decision, an amazing decision, one that we’re very happy about.”

“I was elected on a historic mandate,” Trump said, “but in recent months, we’ve seen a handful of radical left judges effectively try to overrule the rightful powers of the president to stop the American people from getting the policies that they voted for in record numbers.”

It’s a ruling that puts power back in the hands of elected leaders and reins in what many conservatives have long viewed as judicial overreach—one of the most consistent threats to executive authority and constitutional balance in recent years.

While the rhetoric issue cuts across party lines, it’s largely the left’s double standard that’s under scrutiny. When conservatives criticize a court ruling, they’re labeled dangerous. But when left-wing politicians openly threaten Supreme Court justices, as Schumer did, the media shrugs it off.

Chief Justice Roberts has spoken previously in favor of measures to protect judges. In 2022, he supported additional security protections for jurists, saying, “We must support judges by ensuring their safety.”

  • Judicial overreach has long been a tool of the left, used to stall or kill conservative policy wins.
  • Threatening rhetoric toward judges undermines judicial independence, which protects us all from mob rule and emotional politics.
  • The Supreme Court ruling limiting nationwide injunctions is a huge win for the America First agenda—and a check on the activist bench.
  • Roberts’ warning may be subtle, but it underscores just how volatile the environment has become for anyone who dares to enforce law over ideology.

As the summer heats up politically, this is one more reminder that the fight for constitutional governance isn’t just about elections—it’s about institutions. And those who uphold the law need both the freedom and the safety to do their jobs.
