Ever had that moment where you stub your toe and let out a word that would make your grandma gasp? Well, it looks like some Democratic members of Congress are having a few of those moments—just, you know, in front of the whole country.
According to Politico, Democratic lawmakers have been turning up the heat with their language lately, dropping some well-placed (and maybe not-so-well-placed) expletives. Why? Some say it’s an attempt to sound more relatable to everyday Americans. Others argue it’s just a sign of the times—after all, politics these days isn’t exactly known for its polite dinner-table conversations.
Take Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, for example. She recently told Elon Musk to “f*** off” in an interview and later joked that someone should “slap” her to “wake me the f*** up” after she walked out of Trump’s address to Congress. And then there’s Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who responded to questions about the trend with a classic, “Goddamn it, tell me who started that?”
While some lawmakers seem to be letting the words fly naturally—like Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona, who chalks up his colorful language to his Marine Corps background—others have been criticized for what some see as a “scripted” effort to sound edgy. Case in point: a recent video where over 20 Senate Democrats read the same exact line, complete with an expletive, in what felt more like a movie audition than a political statement.
It all comes as Democrats struggle to find their footing after Trump’s re-election in 2024. Social media stunts, like a video featuring Democratic congresswomen styled as video game characters, haven’t exactly been winning them points either. A recent Quinnipiac poll shows only 21% of Americans approve of congressional Democrats—compared to 40% approval for Republicans.
So, what do you think? Does a little swearing make politicians more relatable, or does it feel like a bad attempt at winning over voters? Hit reply and let me know!
