Dr. James Dobson, one of the most influential Christian leaders of the past half-century and founder of Focus on the Family, has passed away at 89. A psychologist by training and a man of faith by calling, Dobson spent his life championing the family as the cornerstone of American society—work that left a lasting mark on culture, politics, and generations of believers.
“Dr. Dobson was a pioneer — a man of deep conviction whose voice shaped the way generations view faith, family, and culture,” said Gary Bauer, senior vice president of public policy at the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI). “His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion helped equip countless families to thrive in a world of shifting values. He was a mentor, a counselor, and a steady voice of truth in turbulent times.”
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1936, Dobson dedicated his life to strengthening marriages, guiding parents, and defending biblical values. He founded Focus on the Family in 1977 in California, later relocating the ministry to Colorado Springs, where it grew into one of the most powerful evangelical organizations in the world. Under his leadership, its daily radio program reached over 4,000 stations across North America, translated into 27 languages, and distributed in more than 160 countries. Families everywhere turned to Dobson’s steady voice for guidance in a culture that increasingly blurred moral lines.
His influence extended well beyond the pulpit. A New York Times bestselling author and Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster, Dobson wrote more than 70 books, including The New Dare to Discipline and When God Doesn’t Make Sense. These works remain staples in Christian homes, equipping parents to raise children with courage and conviction in a world often hostile to faith.
Dobson’s leadership carried him into the halls of power, advising five U.S. presidents—Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump. In 2016, he served on President Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board, ensuring issues central to the faith community were not ignored in Washington. His advocacy gave voice to millions who felt sidelined by political elites, especially on matters of life, family, and morality.
He was unwavering in warning against the cultural forces that threaten the family: abortion, pornography, gambling, and the redefinition of marriage. In doing so, Dobson helped shape national debates for decades, often standing against the tide of political correctness to affirm timeless truths. His courage was not merely about public battles—it was about ensuring that future generations inherited a country where family, faith, and freedom still mattered.
In 2010, after stepping away from Focus, Dobson launched the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute to continue his work on a more personal scale, still prioritizing radio broadcasts and teaching. He never lost sight of his mission: to strengthen families and protect the values that make America strong.
Dobson is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, their children Danae and Ryan, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren. His passing leaves a void, but his legacy lives on in countless homes across America where parents are still guided by his counsel and families remain anchored in faith.
In an age when the role of family is under constant attack, Dr. Dobson’s life stands as a reminder of what one voice, rooted in conviction, can accomplish. His influence will not fade—it will echo for generations.
