How Nadia Odunayo Turned Her Love for Reading Into a Novel Book Business

You know that feeling when a book enters your life at just the right time? The kind that speaks to your soul, challenges your perspective, or just gives you the escape you didn’t know you needed? That’s exactly what The StoryGraph is doing for millions of readers—but instead of stumbling upon a book by chance, this app uses AI to match you with your next perfect read. Think of it as Goodreads with a brain upgrade—a platform designed to get to know your reading style and serve up spot-on recommendations.

From a Setback to a Game-Changer

The mastermind behind The StoryGraph, Nadia Odunayo, never set out to build a revolutionary book-tracking platform. In fact, she was on an entirely different path when fate nudged her toward tech. After finishing college, Odunayo applied for a postgraduate entrepreneurship program—but she didn’t get in. Disappointed? Sure. But instead of giving up, she accepted an unexpected offer: a spot in a coding course.

At first, she didn’t see herself as the “typical” coder. But with a mix of determination and curiosity, she stuck with it, spending five years as a software developer while slowly bringing The StoryGraph to life as a side project.

“It felt ridiculous at times, like really—you, sitting at home alone—are going to build the app that takes over Goodreads?” she shared in an interview with Today. “But because I’m just delusionally optimistic, I thought, well yeah, I can do it.”

One Woman, 3.7 Million Users, and Counting

Unlike many startups that expand into big teams, Odunayo remains the sole software developer behind The StoryGraph. Yep, just her—coding, tweaking, and refining an app that’s now used by over 3.7 million people worldwide.

But what’s even more powerful than the numbers is the impact. Readers reach out to Odunayo, especially women and people of color, saying how much it means to see someone who looks like them leading such a successful tech-driven company. “I already loved StoryGraph,” one reader wrote, “but now I love it even more knowing the person behind it.”

Why Readers Are Making the Switch

So, what makes The StoryGraph stand out? Instead of broad, algorithm-driven suggestions (looking at you, Goodreads), it personalizes recommendations based on your mood, reading preferences, and past book choices. Love dark, twisty thrillers? It’s got you covered. Want something lighthearted and heartwarming? Done. And for readers tired of the Amazon-owned Goodreads interface, StoryGraph’s clean, data-rich design is a breath of fresh air.

For book lovers looking to revamp their reading lists, this might just be the game-changer you need. Check it out here: TheStoryGraph.com
