Alvaro Herrero has been named the 2025 Underwater Photographer of the Year. The Spanish photographer received this prestigious accolade for his captivating image of a mother humpback whale tenderly guiding her newborn calf. His winning shot, titled “Radiant Bond,” was captured in the pristine waters of French Polynesia and triumphed over approximately 6,700 entries submitted from across the globe.
“The mother is escorting her calf to the surface, as the baby is still very young and uncoordinated,” Herrero explained in a press statement. “The calf is exhaling a few bubbles underwater, indicating it is still mastering the ability to hold its breath. For me, this image encapsulates the profound love of a mother and conveys the exquisite beauty and delicate nature of marine life.”
Contest judge Peter Rowlands praised the image, remarking, “This tender yet striking portrayal of maternal connection speaks volumes about the wonders of our world. Although we face challenges, the resurgence of humpback whale populations worldwide is a testament to what conservation efforts can accomplish.”
