Residents of Allentown, Pennsylvania, a traditionally blue city with a significant Hispanic population, are increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction with current Democratic policies, particularly when it comes to the economy. With the cost of living skyrocketing, many are feeling the pinch, and some are starting to question their political loyalties.
Rachel Campos-Duffy of “Fox & Friends Weekend” recently spoke with locals who expressed their concerns. One resident lamented the “excruciatingly high” inflation, while others echoed worries about rising grocery and gas prices, and the struggle to keep wages in line with these growing costs.
The shift in sentiment is noteworthy. While Kamala Harris is performing better among Hispanic voters than Biden did, there’s been a significant increase in support for Republicans among this demographic in recent years. Polls indicate that former President Trump has gained nearly 30 points in voter confidence regarding his ability to handle immigration and border security. Additionally, a recent Axios/Ipsos poll revealed that a larger portion of Latino Americans believe Trump would better manage the economy and immigration compared to the Biden administration.
One Allentown resident summed up the growing sentiment, noting, “Under President Trump, it was better. People were spending more, traveling more, and supporting local businesses.” Another pointed out the changing tide: “Two years ago, everybody hated him. Now the majority are saying, ‘I’m voting for Trump.'”
This frustration has led some lifelong Democrats to reconsider their political stance. One woman shared that she had been a Democrat but began to realize that the policies she was voting for didn’t align with her values. Another added that the Republican Party’s emphasis on God, family, and life resonates more with her personal beliefs.
As the 2024 election draws closer, Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state, may see more voters shifting their support. Earlier this week, Vice President Harris was in Philadelphia, promoting her economic vision alongside Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, her running mate. She emphasized the need for an economy where every American can thrive, not just get by, and promised to fight for lower prices and a better future for families.
As the race heats up, the voices from Allentown may serve as a bellwether for broader shifts across the state and perhaps the nation.
