New York Attorney General Letitia James took the stage Monday with fists raised and defiance in her voice, declaring, “I will not capitulate,” just days after being charged with federal bank fraud.
At a campaign rally for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in Washington Heights, the Democrat was met with chants of “We love Tish,” as supporters applauded her fiery speech. James, who built her career going after conservatives and especially former President Donald Trump, is now portraying herself as the target of “political persecution.”
“We are witnessing the fraying of our democracy, the erosion of our system of government,” James warned, claiming there were “powerful voices trying to silence truth and punish dissent” and “weaponize justice for political gain.” She did not mention Trump by name but made it clear who she blamed.
“This, my friends, is a defining moment in our history,” she told the crowd. “You come for me, you got to come through all of us! Every single one of us!”
Her dramatic speech comes as the Justice Department accuses James of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution — charges that could cost her not only her office but also her law license and political future.
Federal prosecutors say James lied on a mortgage application when she purchased a home in Norfolk, Virginia, for $137,000 in 2020. The terms of her loan required that she live in the home for at least one year as her primary residence. Instead, investigators say she immediately rented the property to a family of three, violating the agreement.
James insists it was all a misunderstanding — claiming she “made a simple error when filling out a form related to the home purchase but quickly rectified it and didn’t deceive the lender.” But that defense rings hollow to many observers, especially given James’s own history of pursuing aggressive legal action against political opponents on far less lenient grounds.
For years, James has been one of the Democratic Party’s most outspoken crusaders against Donald Trump, using her office to pursue investigations and lawsuits that conservatives say were politically motivated. Her relentless pursuit of Trump’s business dealings — long before any formal charges were ever brought — cemented her status as a partisan warrior. Now, she finds herself on the other side of the justice system she once weaponized.
James is scheduled to make her initial appearance in federal court in Virginia on October 24. Under New York law, a felony conviction would force her to immediately step down as attorney general.
Her rallying cry about “protecting democracy” might play well in front of sympathetic crowds, but to many Americans, this is yet another example of the double standard that defines modern politics. When conservative officials face accusations, Democrats demand accountability. When one of their own is indicted, it’s suddenly a “political witch hunt.”
Letitia James may have thought she could make a career out of going after others — but now the spotlight is on her. And this time, she doesn’t get to control the narrative.
KICK HER NO GOOD DEMONRATIC ASS TO THE CURB !!!
