As the Biden administration rushed to push through policies in its final days, a staggering $20 billion in environmental funding was hastily funneled out the door, with little oversight or accountability. That’s according to none other than HBO’s Bill Maher, a well-known liberal commentator, who surprisingly took aim at the Biden team’s reckless spending.
During the online “Overtime” segment of his show Real Time on Friday, Maher didn’t hold back, pointing out that much of the money didn’t even go to real environmental groups—let alone ones capable of solving the actual problems. Instead, he suggested, it was nothing more than a last-minute cash grab before Donald Trump took office and put an end to wasteful spending.
“I saw that story about the 20 billion that went out the door after Biden lost,” Maher said. “There was $20 billion that they shoveled to groups because Trump was coming and they were going to reverse all this stuff. And it supposedly [went to] environmental groups. And they were not really environmental groups and they had no experience in doing it.”
Maher was referring to a massive payout under the guise of climate action, which many suspect was a desperate attempt by Biden officials to lock in spending before Trump’s return. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Democrats prioritize their political allies over real solutions. From so-called “green” initiatives that never amount to anything to shady non-profits raking in taxpayer dollars, this is a familiar playbook.
Maher also pointed out that these funds were unlikely to tackle real environmental issues, such as pollution and plastic waste. “Like I said before, I care about the plastics. Do I think this money was going to get rid of the plastics in my brain? I do not,” he quipped, highlighting the absurdity of the entire situation.
While discussing federal agencies like the Department of Education, Maher acknowledged that while they might do some good, they often end up being massive bureaucratic machines that waste taxpayer dollars. The same principle, he suggested, applied to the Biden administration’s last-minute environmental spending spree.
This raises the question: Where did that $20 billion actually go? And if these so-called environmental groups had no experience in tackling climate issues, what exactly was their purpose? It’s not hard to imagine that well-connected Democrat operatives and special interest groups had their hands in the cookie jar, pocketing taxpayer money while delivering nothing of substance.
This revelation from Maher is another reminder of why oversight and accountability matter—something that was clearly lacking under the Biden administration. As President Trump moves forward with his agenda of cutting waste and restoring fiscal responsibility, expect more revelations of just how deep the swamp really was.
