Michigan Ex-Teacher Accused of Sexual Relationship with 16-Year-Old Boy

In a disturbing case out of Pontiac, Michigan, a former schoolteacher is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student—violating not only the law but also the deep trust parents place in those who educate their children.

Jocelyn Sanroman, 26, who was previously employed at Oakside Prep Academy, has been charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct following allegations that surfaced in 2023. According to Fox 2 Detroit, the case came to light when Sanroman herself reportedly confided in a fellow teacher, who wasted no time in notifying law enforcement.

That teacher’s quick action is now being credited with potentially sparing other students from similar harm.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald, in announcing the charges, made it clear that the issue isn’t just criminal—it’s a violation of the very foundation of the student-teacher relationship:

“This defendant is accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim. These allegations represent the ultimate breach of trust placed in educators by parents and the community,” McDonald said. “As a former teacher myself, I applaud the teacher who contacted police about this situation, protecting other students from further exploitation.”

While 16 is the general age of consent under Michigan law, McDonald explained that those rules change dramatically when a person in a position of power—like a teacher—is involved.

“While a 16-year-old has the ability to consent, that isn’t the same when the relationship is with a teacher,” she said, emphasizing that schools should be safe spaces where authority is not abused.
