Democrats are once again showing their hand—and their fear. On CNN’s OutFront, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) declared that America is no longer “living in a democracy” because, in his view, “there is no rule of law” under President Donald Trump.
The exchange came after host Erin Burnett pointed to a ProPublica story alleging that three Trump cabinet secretaries had each claimed multiple “primary residences” on mortgages. Burnett tried to paint this as hypocrisy, since Trump has previously criticized Democrats over mortgage fraud.
Murphy dismissed it as “essentially a paperwork error,” but quickly pivoted to his real message: an attack on Trump and the Department of Justice. “The news here is really important because it’s confirmation that the Department of Justice is being used to target Donald Trump’s political enemies. So when a Democrat engages in one of these paperwork errors, they are getting targeted with prosecution. But when Republicans that are close to Donald Trump do it, they just look the other way.”
He didn’t stop there. Murphy went on: “This should be really alarming to every single American citizen, because the word is out that the Department of Justice is going to be used to put you away for crimes if you oppose Donald Trump. But if you support Donald Trump, then you largely have immunity. That’s what happened to Eric Adams. He was literally going to go to jail for mass-scale public corruption, but he got pardoned, and the case got dropped because he pledged political allegiance to Donald Trump. That’s not a democracy any longer. We are not living in a democracy.”
The irony is striking. Democrats who spent years weaponizing federal agencies against conservatives—spying on a presidential campaign, dragging Americans through endless Russia hoaxes, and turning the FBI and DOJ into political enforcers—are now trying to claim Trump is the one undermining democracy. It’s a familiar playbook: accuse your opponent of doing exactly what you’ve been doing all along.
Murphy’s outburst reflects the Left’s growing panic. The Trump administration has prioritized cleaning up corruption, reining in bureaucracy, and exposing the partisan gamesmanship that has dominated Washington for years. That’s why Democrats are resorting to overblown rhetoric, insisting the republic is collapsing simply because their grip on unelected power is slipping.
In reality, what threatens the rule of law is not President Trump enforcing accountability—it’s Democrats who redefine “democracy” as permanent one-party control. Their fearmongering says less about Trump and more about how desperate they are to cling to power at any cost.
Hey murph – IF there really is ‘no rule of law’ – why don’t you go and rob a bank or maybe burn down somebody’s house? I can pretty well guarantee you will find out differently.
