The suspect behind the brutal firebombing at Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, Colorado, has been identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national who is in the United States illegally, according to multiple federal sources.
This disturbing revelation was first reported by Fox News’s Bill Melugin, who cited three senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). According to them, Soliman entered the U.S. on August 27, 2022, through LAX airport, on a B1/B2 nonimmigrant visa. He was allowed to stay until February 26, 2023, but overstayed his visa and never left.
Melugin further reported that on September 29, 2022, Soliman filed a claim with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) — possibly for asylum. Astonishingly, the Biden administration approved work authorization for him, which would have been valid until March 28, 2025.
The attack took place over the weekend as peaceful participants gathered for a weekly pro-Israel walk in Boulder. The event was meant to raise awareness and support for the hostages still held by Hamas terrorists in Gaza, now over 600 days since the October 7 attacks.
During the event, witnesses say Soliman launched Molotov cocktails into the crowd and used a makeshift flamethrower, targeting elderly participants.
“This attack happened at a regularly scheduled weekly peaceful event,” said FBI Special Agent Mark Michalek during a press conference.
“Witnesses are reporting that the subject used a makeshift flamethrower and threw an incendiary device into the crowd.”
The victims ranged in age from 67 to 88. Videos circulating online show Soliman shouting phrases like “Free Palestine,” “End Zionists,” and “Palestine is Free” as he allegedly carried out the attack.
Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene. According to KDVR News, one man said he saw flames and smoke, followed by the sight of a woman “burning on the ground.” Two others reportedly suffered burns to their legs.
Another witness, Rick Holter of Pagosa Springs, spoke with Colorado Public Radio (CPR). Holter was in a nearby store when someone shouted that there was a fire outside.
“We watched as the police arrived a couple of minutes later,” Holter said. “The shirtless guy [Soliman] went down on the ground and was handcuffed and taken away.”
Soliman was arrested at the scene by Boulder police. He is expected to face federal terrorism charges, according to the FBI.
“As a result of these preliminary facts, it is clear that this is a targeted act of violence,” Michalek said. “The FBI is investigating this as an act of terrorism.”
Michalek also noted that attacks like this are becoming too common in the United States and warned that violent extremists continue to pose threats to communities across the country.
The attack is already raising serious questions about the Biden administration’s handling of immigration and national security. Critics argue that the lack of enforcement on visa overstays and the ease with which work permits are handed out are making it easier for bad actors to remain in the U.S. undetected.
The suspect should not have been in the country, let alone granted work authorization after filing a vague immigration claim.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous and targeted act” against the Jewish community. He said his administration is working with both local and federal law enforcement.
“My thoughts go out to the people who have been injured by this heinous and targeted act on the Jewish community,” Polis said in a statement.
“Boulder is strong. We have overcome tragedies together and will get through this together as a community.”
Polis also mentioned that the attack occurred on the eve of Shavuot, a sacred Jewish holiday, adding to the pain for the local community.
“Several individuals were brutally attacked while peacefully drawing attention to the plight of hostages who have been held by Hamas terrorists in Gaza for 604 days,” Polis said.
“Hate is unacceptable in our Colorado for all, and I condemn this act of terror. The suspect should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
This attack is a tragic reminder of how national security and immigration policy are directly linked. While peaceful citizens gathered to support innocent hostages, they were violently targeted by someone who should not have been in the country to begin with.
As details continue to emerge, many are asking why this man was allowed to remain in the U.S. and what steps will be taken to prevent similar attacks in the future.
