In recent developments, Russia has firmly dismissed a proposal from France and the United Kingdom for a temporary ceasefire in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The suggested one-month truce aimed to halt hostilities in the air, at sea, and against energy infrastructures, backed by a coalition of at least 20 nations. However, Moscow deemed such a temporary measure “unacceptable,” insisting that only a comprehensive and final settlement would suffice.
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, articulated this stance, emphasizing that any temporary respite would be counterproductive. She argued that it would merely serve to prolong the conflict by allowing Ukrainian forces to regroup. Zakharova stated, “Firm agreements on a final settlement are necessary. Without all this, any respite or regrouping is absolutely unacceptable, as it will lead to exactly the opposite result.”
This sentiment was echoed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who warned that a temporary ceasefire could lead to the direct involvement of NATO members in the war against Russia. Both Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin reiterated their refusal to accept NATO forces’ presence in Ukraine, with Putin asserting that Russia would not relinquish any territory it has annexed.
In a show of force underscoring their position, Russia launched a significant missile and drone assault on Ukraine’s energy facilities. This offensive targeted critical infrastructure, resulting in power outages across various regions. Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko reported that the energy and gas infrastructure in multiple areas was subjected to mass missile and drone attacks, aiming to disrupt power and heating for ordinary citizens.
The scale of the assault was substantial, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stating that approximately 70 missiles and nearly 200 drones were deployed, primarily targeting infrastructure essential for daily life. He lamented that residential buildings were also affected, citing an incident in Kharkiv where a missile struck near an apartment complex, injuring several individuals.
