President Donald Trump didn’t mince words over the weekend in response to Elon Musk’s surprise political pivot, calling the tech mogul’s launch of a third party a recipe for “chaos” — and a move that betrays conservative priorities like free-market choice and energy independence.

On Truth Social Sunday, Trump posted:
“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States — The System seems not designed for them.”
Trump’s remarks follow Musk’s announcement of the “America Party,” unveiled after a Twitter/X poll showed 65% support for “independence” from the so-called “uniparty.” But as Trump noted, third-party efforts in the U.S. have historically undermined the very causes they aim to support, often handing power right back to the Left.

At the core of the rift? Trump pointed to Musk’s vested interests in the now-repealed electric vehicle mandates. As CEO of Tesla, Musk had everything to gain from forcing Americans into EVs — something Trump says he explicitly campaigned against:
“It eliminates the ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate, which would have forced everyone to buy an Electric Car in a short period of time. … People are now allowed to buy whatever they want — Gasoline Powered, Hybrids (which are doing very well), or New Technologies as they come about — No more EV Mandate.”
Trump doubled down, noting that when Musk gave him his “total and unquestioned Endorsement,” he made it clear that repealing the EV mandate was non-negotiable — and Musk didn’t object. But now, with the “Big Beautiful Bill” passed and EV credits slashed, Musk’s interests seem to be shifting — quickly and dramatically.
The feud didn’t stop with electric cars. Trump also revealed that Musk pushed for billionaire astronaut Jared Isaacman — a longtime Democrat donor — to be nominated to run NASA. But after vetting, the administration reversed course.
“I was surprised to learn that he was a blue blooded Democrat, who had never contributed to a Republican before. … I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon’s corporate life.”
A senior Trump official told Breitbart News:
“We don’t confirm Schumer donors in this administration. Jared Isaacman should have never been picked. Trump did the right thing by pulling him.”
While Musk has long been praised for his stance on free speech and breaking Silicon Valley groupthink, this latest pivot toward forming a third party has conservatives raising eyebrows. The Daily Wire recently warned that third parties have historically handed wins to the Left — by splitting conservative votes and weakening electoral unity.
With the GOP now delivering wins like the historic budget bill, expanded border security, and the elimination of the EV mandate, Trump’s clear message is: Now is the time to consolidate, not divide.
As 2026 and America’s 250th anniversary approach, Trump is reminding voters that conservative principles — not tech billionaire agendas — should guide the next chapter of America’s future.
