Last week, U.S. Air Force personnel detected small drones near three key American-operated bases in eastern England: RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell. These bases play crucial roles in supporting U.S. military operations in Europe, making the incidents a notable security concern.

RAF Lakenheath houses the 48th Fighter Wing, a critical combat unit in Europe. RAF Mildenhall is home to the 100th Air Refueling Wing, and RAF Feltwell primarily serves as a hub for housing and other support services.
In a statement, the U.S. Air Force said:
“To protect operational security, we do not discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation. We continue to monitor our airspace and are working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets.”

While it’s unclear whether the drones had hostile intent, the timing of these incidents coincided with heightened tensions in Ukraine.
Last week, Ukraine struck targets inside Russia using intermediate-range missiles provided by the U.S. and Britain. In retaliation, Russia launched ballistic missile strikes on Ukraine and warned it could target countries supplying weapons against it.
