Democratic Member of Congress Confesses Guatemalan Identity

“I’m a Proud Guatemalan Before I’m an American.”
That’s not a declaration from a foreign diplomat—it came straight from the mouth of U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez (D-IL) during a speech to foreign Latinos in Mexico. For the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and millions of Americans, that statement rang loud and clear: a sitting member of Congress openly placing foreign identity above her sworn allegiance to the United States.

This isn’t some offhand comment. It’s a confession of foreign loyalty, and it’s raising serious questions—particularly from Americans who believe our leaders should serve American interests first, not act as spokespeople for other nations.

The Immigration Accountability Project didn’t hold back, posting:

“Wow. I wonder how @repdeliaramirez’s constituents in Illinois feel about her loyalty being to Guatemala rather than to them.”

“There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism…Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance.”

They’re not alone in their concern. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees naturalization and ensures the integrity of American citizenship, publicly reminded citizens of the solemn oath immigrants take to become American:

“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty…”

That loyalty oath is designed to be taken seriously. But Ramirez, born in the U.S. after her parents illegally entered the country, never had to take it. Still, upon entering Congress, she swore a separate oath—one all members of Congress take—to support and defend the Constitution.

Which raises the obvious question: How can someone claim to “bear true faith and allegiance” to the Constitution while simultaneously declaring their primary identity lies with another country?

Ramirez’s words go beyond identity. They reflect a broader trend among progressive lawmakers who prioritize the needs of foreign nationals—including illegal migrants—over the rights and concerns of American citizens.

In a CNN feature, Ramirez described her background:

“I am the wife of a DACA recipient. I am the daughter of Guatemalan working immigrants. I know firsthand the challenges and constant fear our families live every single day.”

That “fear” may shape her worldview—but it also appears to shape her political priorities, as Ramirez has routinely backed legislation and policies that place the interests of illegal immigrants above law-abiding citizens.

Ironically, she’s also positioned herself as a staunch defender of “law and order.” In a combative exchange this May with DHS chief Kristi Noem, Ramirez asked:

“When you took your oath, did you swear to support and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America?”

When Noem responded, “Yes, I did,” Ramirez replied:

“I find that laughable… Trump’s will is not the guiding doctrine of this nation and our country for his or your twisted authoritarian fantasies.”

She accused DHS of violating civil rights, undermining the courts, and “weaponizing the immigration system.”

But it’s Ramirez’s own rhetoric that appears weaponized—and her priorities unmistakably clear.

Her Chicago-based district is now nearly half Hispanic, including a sizable population of illegal immigrants. Yet it’s American voters who elected her, and it’s American laws she swore to uphold. By declaring allegiance to another country while representing U.S. citizens in Congress, Ramirez is exposing the widening gap between identity-driven progressive politics and traditional American governance.

In today’s climate, where open borders, sanctuary policies, and selective enforcement have become political strategies, statements like Ramirez’s aren’t just controversial—they’re dangerous. They chip away at the foundational principle that elected officials serve this country, its laws, and its people.

Americans deserve leaders who stand with the Constitution—not straddle two flags.
