It was anything but a friendly chat at the White House on Friday when President Donald Trump and Maine’s Governor Janet Mills clashed over a hot-button issue—protecting women’s sports. Trump’s executive order, which bars biological males from competing in women’s sports, has faced pushback from several Democratic governors, but he made it clear: defiance won’t come without consequences.
“I hope you continue because you’ll never win another race,” Trump quipped as he zeroed in on Mills. The order rewrites Title IX, cutting off federal funding for schools that allow male athletes to compete in women’s divisions. When Trump directly asked Mills if she planned to comply, her response was firm: “I’m complying with state and federal laws.”
Trump wasn’t buying it. “Well, we are the federal law,” he shot back. He warned that Maine would lose all federal funding if it refused to comply, adding that even in a “somewhat liberal” state like Maine, “your population doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports.”
Mills didn’t back down, telling Trump she’d see him in court. His response? “That should be a really easy one. Enjoy your life after governor because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”
This fight isn’t just a political spat—it’s shaping up to be a legal showdown. A recent New York Times/Ipsos poll found that nearly 80% of Americans oppose biological men competing in women’s sports. With public sentiment largely on Trump’s side, Mills may be in for a tough battle.
