Elon Musk is stepping up to support California residents affected by devastating wildfires. The billionaire entrepreneur announced plans to repurpose Tesla Cybertrucks and Starlink technology to provide free internet in areas ravaged by the fires, particularly in Greater Los Angeles and Malibu.
Musk shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Cybertruck deliveries in California would be delayed temporarily as the vehicles are converted into mobile Starlink base stations. These trucks, equipped with internet terminals, will be strategically placed in grid patterns to ensure reliable connectivity in the hardest-hit regions. To further assist, the Cybertrucks will also have security personnel, snacks, and beverages for those in need.
This move follows Musk’s previous announcement offering free Starlink terminals to areas left without cell service. A local reporter credited Starlink as the sole means of communication in fire-affected regions, highlighting its critical role in disaster response.
The wildfires, which have claimed five lives and destroyed thousands of homes, have reignited discussions about leveraging technology to combat such disasters. Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman even proposed a collaboration between Musk and defense-tech entrepreneur Palmer Luckey to use satellites, AI, and drones for early fire detection and suppression.
Despite criticism from some quarters, Musk remains steadfast. “If this helps save even one house or someone’s life, we should still do it,” he stated.
