Hegseth Has Tapped Investigators for Botched Afghanistan Withdrawal: ‘Accountability Will Be Coming’

Nearly three years after the chaotic and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan, the U.S. government is finally taking action to investigate what went wrong. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has confirmed that a full-scale Pentagon investigation is underway, aimed at uncovering who made the decisions, why they were made, and who should be held responsible.

“We’ve already identified folks that’ll be in charge of that full investigation inside the Pentagon,” Hegseth said in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News.

While there is no exact timeline, Hegseth emphasized the importance of getting it right:

“Sadly, we’ve already waited two-and-a-half, three years since what occurred. I don’t want to wait longer, but I always want to get it right.”

The withdrawal from Afghanistan in July 2021 was supposed to mark the end of America’s longest war, but instead, it became a symbol of poor planning, chaos, and tragedy:

• 13 U.S. service members were killed in a terrorist attack at Abbey Gate in Kabul.
• Hundreds of Americans and allies were left behind, despite the Biden administration claiming it was a “successful” withdrawal.
• The U.S. military, in an attempt to prevent further attacks, mistakenly targeted an aid worker and his family instead of a terrorist, an incident the Pentagon initially called a “righteous strike”.
• No top officials were fired or held responsible—except Marine Col. Stuart Scheller, who lost his career after calling for accountability in a viral video.

Now, under Hegseth’s leadership, the Pentagon aims to examine the full chain of events and uncover the truth behind the withdrawal.

“The way you establish real accountability is by establishing real fact chains—chains of events, information, what happened. Why did it happen? Who made the decision?” Hegseth explained.

He made it clear that this investigation is not about politics but about restoring trust in the Defense Department:

“I don’t think there’s anybody that feels like there’s been an honest accounting of what happened in Afghanistan. That’s our job… accountability will be coming.”

With this investigation officially in motion, the pressure is on the Pentagon to deliver answers. Will this finally bring justice to the families of fallen service members and those left behind? Will top officials be held accountable for their failures?

Only time will tell—but at least, the long-overdue process of accountability has begun.
