California just gained two incredible additions to its list of protected lands, and the impact is monumental—literally! The White House announced the creation of Chuckwalla National Monument in Southern California near Joshua Tree and Sáttítla National Monument in Northern California. Joseph DL Mirelez, chairman of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians, spoke about the emotional weight of this moment, saying, “We are happy to see the designation protect this area that contains thousands of cultural places and objects of vital importance to the history and identity of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians.” For his tribe, the Chuckwalla monument represents a connection to ancestors and the preservation of their legacy.
Up north, the Sáttítla National Monument carries similar significance for the Pit River Tribe. Brandy McDaniels, a tribal member and advocate for the monument’s creation, shared her joy: “It gives you new faith that the process is working and that people are listening to Indigenous voices. We’ve spent a lifetime fighting to protect this area, and it’s hard to put into words how important this is to us.”
Beyond the environmental and cultural preservation, these designations highlight a broader victory. They signal a commitment to listening to Indigenous communities, honoring their stewardship, and ensuring that these lands remain unspoiled for future generations.
