California just gained two incredible additions to its list of protected lands, and the impact is monumental—literally! The White House announced the creation of Chuckwalla National Monument in Southern California near Joshua Tree and Sáttítla National Monument in Northern California. Up north, the Sáttítla National Monument carries similar significance for the Pit River Tribe. Brandy McDaniels, a tribal member and advocate for the monument’s creation, shared her joy: “It gives you new faith that the process is working and that people are listening to Indigenous voices. We’ve spent a lifetime fighting to protect this area, and it’s hard to put into words how important this is to us.”
